Squishmallows Creator Lists Lavish Bel-Air Mansion for $38 Million
Jonathan Kelly’s Luxurious Bel-Air Listing
Jonathan Kelly, the entrepreneurial mind behind the phenomenally successful Squishmallows plush toys, has made headlines again, this time in the real estate sphere. Kelly is asking nearly $38 million for his extravagant Bel-Air mansion. Originally acquired for $26 million in 2023, the property was an investment venture rather than a personal residence.
The Plush Toy Revolution
The success of Kelly’s Squishmallows during the pandemic has been noteworthy. These ultra-soft, marshmallow-like toys became an overnight sensation on platforms like TikTok. Capitalizing on their popularity, Kelly strategically sold the toy line in two major deals, garnering significant profits which he then redirected into real estate.
A Shrewd Investment in Real Estate
Kelly’s purchase of the Bel-Air property comes ahead of Los Angeles’ implementation of a mansion tax, which affects properties priced above $5 million. He secured the mansion at a considerable discount from its initial asking price of $47.5 million. Despite its market positioning as a luxury residence, Kelly always viewed the mansion through an investment lens.
Never a Home, Always an Asset
Although never occupied by Kelly himself, the mansion was far from dormant. According to Sotheby’s International Realty’s Marc Noah, the property was leased out, though financial specifics remain undisclosed. The mansion, featuring three levels and sprawling over 16,850 square feet, is positioned strategically near the Bel-Air Country Club, adding to its allure.
Bel-Air’s Competitive Real Estate Market
The mansion’s $37.995 million price tag is seen as an entry point in the upscale neighborhood. High-profile properties nearby, including a $130 million estate linked to billionaire Peter Thiel, underscore the competitiveness of the market. Kelly’s belief in the mansion’s potential returns emphasizes its value as a strategic financial move rather than a mere dwelling.
This move highlights Kelly’s ability to navigate lucrative areas beyond the toy industry, positioning himself as a savvy investor in the luxury real estate market.
