Humayun Kabir to Exit Politics Over Alleged Rejinagar Bypoll Irregularities

Humayun Kabir, leader of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) and elected Member of Legislative Assembly from Naoda, has declared his intention to resign from his position and withdraw from the political arena after the Durga Puja celebrations. This decision stems from his dissatisfaction with the execution of the recent Rejinagar Assembly bypoll, wherein his son Golam Nabi Azad was one of the candidates.

Kabir has vocally criticized the bypoll process, describing it as a sham. He has specifically accused law enforcement and administrative officials of exerting undue pressure on his supporters, ultimately leading him to question the integrity of the entire electoral exercise. The counting of votes, set for October 9, pertains to a seat that Kabir had vacated earlier after securing wins in two different constituencies during the Bengal Assembly elections.

The AJUP chief’s announcement arrived before the official results of the Rejinagar bypoll were tabulated, indicating his profound disillusionment with the procedural conduct. Kabir attributed responsibility for the alleged election mismanagement to the overarching influence of the BJP-led state administration, which he suggested has compromised political propriety and democracy.

This outcry against the electoral process in Rejinagar comes at a time when allegations of electoral discrepancies are not uncommon, and Kabir’s statement adds a significant voice to the discourse around transparent democratic practices in the region. He has indicated plans to hold a public meeting to express apologies to those he represents.

The upcoming days are likely to reveal whether Kabir will follow through with his announced political exit, which could potentially stir further political repercussions within the local and state-level dynamics. His decision adds to a broader narrative of political dissent emerging from contested electoral events, which continues to shape the regional political landscape in noteworthy ways.
