Innovative Prosthetic Ear Transforms Life for Northern Ireland Man
Revolutionary Prosthetic Gives Hearing to Northern Ireland Man
Stephen Gilbert, a 74-year-old resident of Aghalee, Northern Ireland, has experienced a remarkable change in his life with the recent addition of a prosthetic ear. Born with a rare condition known as unilateral microtia, Stephen spent his entire life without the ability to hear on his left side. This condition resulted in an underdeveloped or missing external ear.
The turning point for Stephen came when he was fitted with a newly designed prosthetic that integrates a hearing aid, allowing him for the first time to hear sounds from his previously silent left side. This life-altering procedure was carried out at the Ulster Hospital, the only facility in Northern Ireland that offers such specialized services.
The Journey to Hearing
Stephen’s journey towards better hearing began years ago when he first visited the Ulster Hospital in 1997. Over the years, he has received and adapted various prosthetic ears. Earlier attempts involved reconstructive surgeries using his own skin and tissue, but these couldn’t replicate the natural ear’s function or appearance.
It was an article read by his wife that ultimately led him to consider advances in prosthetic technology which could serve both aesthetic and functional purposes. This inspired a visit to his local GP, setting the wheels in motion for the eventual fitting of his new prosthetic ear.
Transformative Technology
The process involved removing previously grafted tissue and inserting small implants to anchor the new prosthetic. A mould of his right ear was used to ensure the new prosthetic matched, both in look and fit. The result was a prosthetic that not only restored a missing part of his appearance but transformed his auditory world by transmitting sound to his functioning right ear.
Brian Bigmore, the consultant responsible for Stephen’s prosthetic, highlighted the life-changing impact these devices have. The Ulster Hospital has provided around 4,000 prostheses, ranging from ears to eyes and other facial features, benefiting countless individuals like Stephen.
Stephen now enjoys interactions in a new way and feels more self-assured in his appearance. The advancement in hearing aid technologies has further enhanced his daily experiences, significantly improving his quality of life.
