Stepped-Up Enforcement in Delhi Post-Hostel Collapse
In a significant move following the recent structural collapse of a hostel building, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has stepped up its crackdown on unauthorized constructions and unsafe buildings throughout the city. The operation included the demolition of 41 buildings and the sealing of 61 properties across various zones in the city, all conducted as part of a rigorous enforcement drive to restore safety and adherence to building norms.
The recent initiative on Thursday mirrored an earlier effort carried out a day before, where another 46 properties were demolished, and 20 were sealed under similar actions to enforce the Master Plan of Delhi and existing building regulations. As a precautionary and corrective step, the MCD issued 32 show-cause notices and sanctioned three demolition orders, intensifying efforts to bring errant constructions under compliance.
Targeted Areas and Specific Actions
The drive covered a wide array of areas in Delhi. In the eastern part of the city, places like Khureji Khas, Jagatpuri, and Laxmi Nagar saw significant actions. Over in the west, unauthorized constructions met their demise in localities including Paschim Puri, Madipur, and Subhash Nagar among others. Further demolitions were reported in Vipin Garden, Bakkarwala, and parts of Nihal Vihar.
The operation in Paschim Puri notably involved dismantling roof panels from multiple floors, reflecting the authority’s focus on serious structural violations. A similar approach was taken in Subhash Nagar where upper-story extensions such as a terrace toilet block were removed. Bakkarwala saw complete demolition of a building, indicating zero tolerance for non-compliance.
Broader Implications for Residents
The recent escalated measures come in the wake of safety checks that identified a concerning number of paying guest accommodations across Delhi. Approximately 1,355 such buildings, housing around 27,000 residents, have been marked for thorough safety inspections to prevent future mishaps.
This rigorous enforcement wave highlights the MCD’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Delhi’s residents by addressing long-standing issues of unauthorized construction and regulatory non-compliance.
