Indonesia’s International Airport Faces Disruptions Due to Volcanic Ash

Indonesia’s Airport Disrupted by Volcanic Eruption

In a significant operational halt, Indonesia’s primary international airport, Soekarno-Hatta, suspended activities due to ash clouds from the erupting Anak Krakatoa. This disruption comes as the volcanic eruption sent clouds of ash into the surrounding airspace, posing significant threats to aircraft safety.

Reports indicate that more than 22,000 passengers experienced delays as 209 flights faced cancellations or diversions. The majority of affected routes were those connecting to major hubs such as Singapore, Doha, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur. Locally, disruptions included the cancellation of several flights heading to Bali.

Impact and Safety Measures

The decision to shut down operations hinges on protecting aircraft from volcanic ash, which can severely impair jet engines and reduce visibility. The ash poses a significant risk by potentially damaging turbine blades and windscreens while clogging essential aviation systems.

Authorities announced the suspension would remain in effect at least until early Sunday afternoon, with updates expected as conditions evolve. This measure comes after rigorous testing confirmed ash presence in the airport vicinity, a statement confirmed by the nation’s transport ministry.

Historical and Geological Background

Anak Krakatoa, meaning Child of Krakatoa, emerged in a caldera left by the catastrophic 1883 eruption, which is one of the deadliest in history. The volcano lies in the narrow strait between Java and Sumatra and remains under close observation due to its periodic activity.

For maritime safety, ships navigating the region have been advised to maintain a safe distance of at least three kilometers from the volcano, as per warnings issued by port authorities.
