Tigray Conflict Intensifies: 52 Civilians Dead Amid Ethiopian Clashes

Escalation of Violence in Tigray Leaves 52 Dead

Violence in Ethiopia’s Tigray region has intensified, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 52 civilians. Over recent days, Alamata has witnessed fierce clashes, as government forces reportedly gained control over this strategic town, possibly intending to advance further north towards Mekelle, the principal city in the region.

The resurgence of conflict follows a prolonged period of tension between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), both of whom accuse the other of violating a 2022 peace agreement. This accord had previously brought an end to a devastating two-year civil war. The complexities of the situation have continued to affect nearby areas, with 33 tourists currently unable to leave the historic town of Lalibela due to safety fears.

Reports from the Ground Reveal Significant Turmoil

A British tourist in Lalibela has reported hearing continuous gunfire and artillery, indicating ongoing unrest. Despite some improvements, there remains a significant military presence in the historic town, home to ancient rock-hewn churches that are of great significance to Orthodox Christians. The conflict has pitted government forces against a coalition of Tigrayan fighters and some local militias, including from the Amhara region.

Fears are mounting that neighboring Eritrea might become embroiled in the conflict, given allegations of support for armed groups, though Asmara has denied such claims. The intricate web of alliances and enmities in the region makes the situation even more volatile.

Humanitarian Situation Deteriorates in Conflict Zones

The situation within Tigray grows increasingly dire as communications remain largely cut, making accurate reports challenging. In Alamata, conditions are worsening as many displaced individuals seek refuge there. Essential services such as banking, internet, and electricity have been disrupted, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Médecins Sans Frontières has been inundated, treating more than 700 wounded individuals in the area in just a few days. A local doctor, speaking anonymously, highlighted the tragedy saying that indiscriminate shelling had incurred heavy casualties, including young children.

Access to financial services in Lalibela remains inconsistent, with online banking operative but cash in short supply. Some tourists have managed to leave the area, though concerns linger over the region’s stability and the potential displacement of further residents who stay in anticipation of better prospects.
