Zack Polanski Aims for Victory in Holborn and St Pancras
Green Party leader Zack Polanski is expressing strong ambition in his attempt to win the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, a seat vacated by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Despite facing significant odds, Polanski is optimistic about his chances against Labour, who previously clinched the seat with a hefty majority.
During his fourth visit to this North London constituency in a week, Polanski has been actively engaging with local residents to build momentum. Although not formally declared as the Green candidate yet, the local party members are expected to nominate him soon.
The departure of Starmer, who stepped down amid political shifts and handed Labour’s leadership to Andy Burnham, has created a unique opportunity. While some suggest the Greens might struggle to secure this seat, Polanski remains undeterred. He likens his campaign to historic political efforts where persistence paid off, referencing leaders who pursued office multiple times before succeeding.
Door-to-Door Campaigning Gathers Support
Despite an initial slow start in connecting with constituents during canvassing efforts in King’s Cross, Polanski’s campaign has gathered pace. As he knocked on countless doors, he engaged with enthusiastic supporters, including many who recognized him from his presence on social media platforms like TikTok.
Communicating through intercoms with residents who couldn’t come to the door, he found an ardent fan base even among those who are physically restricted. Polanski’s approach includes not just winning votes but also building a genuine connection with the community.
Challenges and Confidence
Polanski acknowledges the substantial challenge ahead but remains focused on converting past efforts into success. In 2024, the Greens finished third in this constituency, with Starmer winning by over 11,000 votes. Now, with the endorsement from notable figures like Andrew Feinstein, Polanski believes there is a viable path to victory.
While he faces skepticism from some political analysts about the Greens’ ability to seize the seat, Polanski derides such pessimism as drama-seeking. The campaign, marked by a tangible mix of optimism and pragmatism, continues to forge ahead with hopes pinned on overturning established political narratives.
As the by-election looms, Polanski’s presence and efforts in Holborn and St Pancras could mark a significant shift for the Green Party, testing its appeal against the backdrop of a traditional Labour stronghold.
