AI Leaders Urge UN for International Safety Standards
AI Chiefs Advocate for Global Safety Regulations at UN
Prominent figures from leading AI companies urged the United Nations to establish international standards for managing the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence (AI). Leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face highlighted the potential risks AI poses to society, emphasizing a need for global coordination to ensure its safe development.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, along with Dario Amodei from Anthropic and Clement Delangue of Hugging Face, stressed the importance of creating common evaluation methods for AI risks. They presented their arguments at a UN meeting, underscoring the necessity for a collaborative approach toward the responsible progression of AI technology.
Amodei of Anthropic recently authored an influential essay suggesting a deliberate slowdown in AI advancements to address concerns over the technology’s threat to humanity. This cautious approach was backed by Altman and others, although the notion met resistance at the conference. Michael Kratsios, a technology advisor previously associated with Uber and the Trump administration, opposed introducing new regulations, arguing that the burgeoning pace of AI should not be stifled.
Addressing the UN, Altman warned against allowing AI decisions to remain concentrated in Silicon Valley. He advocated for “national and international” standards to evaluate AI tools’ capabilities and risks, stressing the importance of a “shared language” for understanding and compliance between countries. The OpenAI head called for quick incident reporting protocols to prevent potential disasters akin to recent events.
Amodei echoed these sentiments, stating that mismanaged AI could pose a threat to humanity. He called for stringent safety measures and expressed willingness to slow development if needed to ensure the safe release of AI technologies. Delangue of Hugging Face added his voice to the discussion, emphasizing stronger standards for monitoring AI incidents globally.
This push for regulation comes in the wake of a significant hacking incident involving Hugging Face, highlighting vulnerabilities within the industry. This incident served as a reminder of the importance of having robust safeguards in place and the potential consequences if AI technologies are not carefully managed.
The calls for international consensus reflect a growing recognition that AI’s challenges surpass the capacity of individual companies or countries to address in isolation, demanding a collective global effort.
