Grandmother Becomes Three-Time World Champion in Powerlifting
From Lockdown Hobby to World Champion
Martine Barons, a 65-year-old from Stratford-upon-Avon, has achieved remarkable success in powerlifting, becoming a world champion three times over within a mere two and a half years of starting the sport. Her venture into weightlifting began during the pandemic lockdown when she was inspired by a seminar discussing fitness tips for women experiencing menopause.
The Rise of ‘The Deadlifting Grandma’
Initially ignited by a desire to remain active, Barons’ interest was further fueled by a colleague at the University of Warwick who doubles as a personal trainer. This mentor recognized her potential and introduced her to the basics of deadlifting. What began as a leisure activity rapidly evolved into competitive participation, culminating in her recent victory at the AWPC World Powerlifting Championships in the 65 to 85 age division.
Transforming Strength and Confidence
Through this journey, Barons has noticed a profound transformation in both her physical capabilities and her self-assurance. She describes feeling rejuvenated, noting that her physical capabilities seem decades younger than they are. The changes extend beyond competitions, as her day-to-day activities have become easier, enhancing her quality of life.
Empowering Others
Barons encourages other women to explore strength training as a way to boost fitness and confidence. She suggests options such as joining a gym to develop personalized programs or utilizing resistance bands for those who prefer working out in the privacy of their homes.
A Journey of Discovery and Connection
Beyond the physical benefits, Barons cherishes the personal growth and international connections she has made through powerlifting. “I have met people from all over the world and gained invaluable experiences,” she shares, reflecting on the rewarding path she forged from a simple lockdown hobby to a celebrated championship career.
