Derby Tragedy: Elderly Man Stabbed in Unprovoked Attack
In a harrowing case, Derby resident Julian Donoher, 51, has been detained under the Mental Health Act after he fatally stabbed 82-year-old Gerard Ring in a random and unprovoked attack. The tragic incident occurred outside Ring’s home on 6 September 2025.
Gerard Ring, a retired builder originally from Dublin, was relaxing in his beloved front garden when the brutal attack unfolded. Ring, described as a dedicated family man, lost his life three days later in hospital due to severe wounds.

During the court proceedings at Derby Crown Court, prosecutor Mark Haywood KC presented a chilling account of the day of the incident. Surveillance footage showed Donoher, shirtless and agitated, approaching Ring without warning and committing the attack. The court was informed that Ring managed to retreat into his home and call emergency services after the stabbing.
The motive behind the senseless violence was attributed to Donoher’s delusional beliefs. He falsely accused Ring of being a paedophile, a baseless claim that no evidence supported. Donoher claimed he was acting on instructions from the police to eliminate undesirables, a fantastical assertion that Haywood dismissed as utter fabrication.
Community Reacts to the Verdict
In a poignant victim impact statement, Tracey Ring, one of Gerard Ring’s daughters, condemned Donoher’s actions as “vile and inhumane.” The family mourns the loss of a man who was revered for his moral integrity and generosity. His daughter Sapphire Greatorex recalled how she cherished supporting her father throughout his battle with incurable blood cancer.
The presiding judge, Shaun Smith KC, decreed an indefinite hospital order, emphasizing the necessity to protect the community from Donoher’s unpredictable behavior. The judgment reflects a balance between justice for Ring’s family and addressing Donoher’s mental health needs.
A Grim Reminder of Mental Health Crises
Investigations into Donoher’s history revealed untreated mental health issues. Reports indicated Donoher suffered from schizoaffective disorder and had ceased taking prescribed medication.
