Devastating Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Strikes Panama
Panama Rocked by Massive Earthquake
Panama faced a serious natural event when a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck, causing significant building damage and concerns across the region. The tremor’s intensity led to a widespread tsunami alert affecting neighboring countries.
The earthquake was concentrated approximately 10 kilometers from the small locality of Pitaloza Arriba in the heart of Panama. Experts from the US Geological Survey reported that around 4.6 million individuals felt the quake, experiencing moderate to severe vibrations.
Authorities quickly evacuated structures within Panama City, notably a maternity ward, in response to the seismic event which unfolded just before 3 PM local time. Eye-witness reports suggest that the towns of Penonomé and Soná experienced building collapses, though these have yet to receive official confirmation.
Tsunami Warning Issued
In the aftermath, the US Tsunami Warning System cautioned that the quake might incite tsunamis reaching as far as Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, and Mexico. This heightened alertness in the region as seismic activity remained a pressing issue.
The quake occurred at a depth of 12 kilometers, which tends to exacerbate surface impact and potential for destruction. However, the full scope of the damage and possible casualties remain under examination.
Interestingly, the catastrophic quake hit merely days before Panama’s planned national drill aimed at preparing for such emergencies. This incident also follows significant seismic events earlier this year in Colombia and Venezuela, adding to the region’s geological concerns.
The event has prompted urgent discussions on disaster preparedness, underlining the critical need for effective emergency protocols and infrastructure resilience in the face of unpredictable natural phenomena.
