Life Lessons from a Terminal Cancer Diagnosis
Embracing Life’s Simple Pleasures
For Rex Mackrill, a diagnosis of terminal prostate cancer brought a sudden clarity about what truly matters in life. Hailing from Tetbury, Gloucestershire, Rex, 65, now finds immense joy in ordinary moments that might have previously gone unnoticed. “It’s the small things, like savoring the taste of good food or feeling the rain,” he states, recognizing the value in life’s simplest pleasures.
Confronting the Shadows of the Past
A profound regret for Rex is the time he spent unknowingly wrestling with unaddressed trauma from his childhood. Diagnosed with PTSD later in life, he reflects on living decades burdened by anxiety without understanding its roots. “I always sensed darkness within me,” Rex admits, a struggle only illuminated when a life coach pointed out the signs of deep-seated trauma.
The Journey to Acceptance and Healing
Despite the enormous challenge ahead, Rex’s journey towards acceptance involved embracing therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). “They helped shift my perspective,” Rex explains, noting a marked decrease in his lifelong anxiety. What once thrived at a “10 out of 10” now recedes into calmness, allowing him a more peaceful existence.
Letting Go and Living Fully
Losing the capacity to work was another significant adjustment for Rex, previously employed as a GP practice manager. However, the quality time spent with family remains his biggest priority. “We’ve always focused on our boys,” he shares, highlighting a continuously family-centered life.
Beyond his personal struggles, Rex is proactive about guiding others facing similar challenges. He advises: “Seek help from trusted sources; no one should bear their burdens alone.” With his time limited, Rex thrives on finding fulfillment in creative pursuits like poetry and simplifying life for others by donating possessions.
Recently, watching rooks play in the wind illustrated a poignant lesson. “The way they persistently returned to their perch despite the gusts reminded me of the gently persistent nature of life itself,” he comments. It’s this newfound presence, amid uncertainties, that defines Rex’s view today.
