Man Jailed for 24 Years for Attempted Murder of Ex-Partner in Carmarthen

Man Sentenced to 24 Years for Vicious Assault on Ex-Partner

In a chilling case of domestic violence, James McKenna, 58, of Carmarthen, has been sentenced to 24 years imprisonment following a brutal attack on his former partner, Joanne Sidaway. This shocking incident, which took place in January, led to a manhunt lasting several days. McKenna was found guilty of attempted murder in July, having already admitted to wounding Sidaway with intent.

The violent encounter occurred when McKenna ambushed Sidaway as she walked her dog in Carmarthen Park. It was reported in Swansea Crown Court that McKenna, armed with a kitchen knife, lay in wait amidst the park’s bushes, preparing for the assault. He attacked Sidaway, stabbing her repeatedly in the chest, before fleeing the scene and sparking a significant police response in the area.

During the trial, McKenna confessed to having planned to harm Sidaway, driven by anger stemming from their relationship ending a few months prior. Despite denying the intent to kill her, the jury was not convinced, considering the premeditated nature of his actions. Testimonies during the trial recounted how Sidaway’s screams deterred McKenna, prompting neighbours to intervene and call for help.

Escape and Capture

After the attack, McKenna attempted to evade capture by retreating into nearby woods, where he remained for three days. Without essential supplies, he eventually sought medical attention at a hospital in Aberystwyth due to frostbite. It was here that police arrested him, thereby concluding the manhunt.

The court heard testimonies from Sidaway and bystanders, detailing the horrifying experience and subsequent trauma. Images presented during the trial showcased Sidaway’s extensively damaged clothing and injuries, underscoring the attack’s severity. Despite the attack, Sidaway chose not to submit a personal victim statement.

Historical Patterns and Consequences

This incident wasn’t McKenna’s first brush with the law concerning domestic violence. His past included a conviction from 2016 for assaulting a different ex-partner. The prosecution highlighted this history, depicting a pattern of behavior where McKenna struggled to accept the end of relationships. In his defense, efforts were made to portray McKenna as remorseful, with him expressing regret for his actions through a letter to the court.

Ultimately, Judge Paul Thomas KC described McKenna’s actions as both calculated and ruthless. The sentence reflects the gravity of McKenna’s crime and serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of domestic violence. He will serve two-thirds of his sentence before the possibility of release on license.
