In a dramatic move, the small village of Piddington in Oxfordshire has voiced its dissent against a UK government proposal by voting for symbolic independence. This referendum arises from a contentious plan to introduce over a thousand asylum seekers into a former military facility in the area.
The residents, numbering around 350, cast their votes on Tuesday in a referendum steered by the local parish council. With a former Ministry of Defence site at Bicester earmarked to accommodate up to 1,256 male asylum seekers, the community expressed strong opposition. Out of 312 votes counted, an overwhelming 285 were in favor of leaving the UK, marking their protest.
