Recruitment Boss Allegedly Behind Online Harassment Campaign Against RNLI
Allegations of Online Harassment Against RNLI and Activists
Tom Watson, a recruitment firm owner from Worcester, faces accusations of running a coordinated online harassment campaign targeted at the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and anti-racism activists. Allegedly operating under the pseudonym “Big Time Charlie” on the platform X, Watson is said to have orchestrated attacks that unsettled lifeguards and supporters of minority hiring practices.
Activists claim the account, with nearly 50,000 followers, was progressively used to intimidate those involved in rescue missions across the Channel. Following an investigation by the advocacy group Hope Not Hate, the account was deactivated, leaving a trail of disrupted personal lives and organizational reputations.
The Impact of Doxxing on Victims
Victims of the campaign recount significant distress caused by the public exposure of personal details online. Chantelle Lunt, a Merseyside Green Party councillor, encountered personal data shared maliciously, leading her to report the incident to authorities. The widespread circulation of a ‘Traitorbase’ spreadsheet aimed at individuals involved in anti-racism efforts has heightened fears about safety among targeted groups.
One of the targeted charity spokespeople expressed frustration, describing the doxxing as a malevolent attempt to inject fear and fragmentation within communities striving for inclusivity and equal opportunity. They called for more robust action from social media companies to curb the spread of such harmful content.
Connections and Consequences
Despite the account deletion, traces of its activities remain visible. The profile mirrored Watson’s personal life, with geographic and professional details aligning closely with his own. Evidence included a shared interest in right-wing politics, specifically backing the Restore Britain party.
Although businesses reported no immediate adverse outcomes from their exposure, the unsettling nature of being targeted for supporting minority hiring illustrates the pervasive impact of such campaigns. This situation not only puts a strain on individuals but also could deter organizations from promoting diversity initiatives.
While Watson has yet to comment, he’s reportedly balancing time between the UK and the US, leading Futura Energy Group, a company focused on specialized recruitment related to AI.
