Reform UK Donations Under Scrutiny Amid Bill Amendment

Proposed amendments to a parliamentary bill could significantly impact Reform UK’s substantial £72m donations, bringing their legality into question. These changes are set to be presented to the House of Lords as part of efforts to impose stricter residency requirements on political donors.

Government’s Stance on Political Donations

The government, under Andy Burnham, has unveiled plans to enhance existing legislation to ensure political donors have a substantial UK residency connection. This move arises shortly after Reform UK’s announcement of large financial contributions from two cryptocurrency moguls, Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. Both have previously resided overseas, which has prompted closer scrutiny of their donations.

Residency Requirements and Political Impact

As part of the new measures, individual donors must demonstrate an ongoing physical presence in the UK, aligning with broader government measures such as tax status. This includes a condition that expatriates returning to the UK must wait until the start of 2028 to make political contributions if they become UK residents again only this year. This stipulation specifically affects the donations from Harborne and Delo, valued at £72m, potentially delaying their acceptance by Reform UK.

Reform UK’s Response

Reform UK’s Nigel Farage has argued that the donations comply with current laws and the stipulations of the bill currently under parliamentary review. He emphasized that under the present legal framework, the contributions are legitimate. Meanwhile, the planned legislative adjustments cast doubts on whether these donations remain compliant.

Labour’s Perspective

Labour figures, including Sharon Taylor and Angela Rayner, have criticized the equivalence drawn between millionaire donations and collective union contributions to Labour. They underscored the importance of maintaining a system where the political process cannot be overly influenced by wealthy individuals.

As the House of Lords reviews the proposed amendments, the outcome will determine the future direction of party funding in the UK, particularly affecting parties like Reform UK that receive large sums from abroad-based contributors. The developments underscore a broader push for transparency and accountability in political financing, resonating with ongoing debates on securing fair and democratic political practices.
