Sailors Missing After Black Sea Attacks on Bulgarian Vessels
Black Sea Vessel Attacks Leave Sailors Missing
In a concerning development in the Black Sea, a merchant ship has sunk and its crew is unaccounted for following a drone attack, according to the Bulgarian government. This incident is one of two attacks reported near Bulgaria’s coastline, deepening regional security tensions.
The second vessel involved in the attacks was a grain carrier, which also suffered damage. Fortunately, all 18 crew members have been rescued, although two required medical attention due to injuries sustained during the attack.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev expressed his concerns over these assaults, highlighting their occurrence within the country’s exclusive economic zone. He refrained from directly accusing any party, though the attacks unfold amidst increasing Black Sea hostilities attributed to Russia’s ongoing military campaign against Ukraine.
While there has been no direct response from Russia regarding these particular incidents, the country has increased its military operations across the region. These events follow accusations by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Moscow recently targeted a civilian vessel delivering corn.
The attacks in the early hours of Wednesday involved both air and sea drones. They took place approximately 70 miles off the coast from the town of Byala, in eastern Bulgaria. Officials report that the sunken ship was registered under Togo’s flag, and search efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue any missing crew members.
Rescue operations revealed overturned boats, life jackets, and rafts, but the total number of sailors on board remains unclear. Meanwhile, assistance from Bulgarian sailors ensured the safety of the crew from the second vessel, which included 11 Turkish and seven Indian nationals.
This comes in the wake of another maritime attack near Odesa on Tuesday, claiming one life and injuring several others. This vessel was registered under the Marshall Islands, adding another layer of complexity to the escalating conflict in the Black Sea.
As the geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe continues to change, these maritime incidents underscore the importance of securing international waters and maintaining maritime safety. The Bulgarian Prime Minister has called the drone strikes a stark breach of maritime law, emphasizing their unacceptability within the bounds of international statutes.
