Shetland Officer Denies Rape Allegations in Edinburgh Trial
A police officer, John Williamson, currently facing serious allegations, has taken the stand at the High Court in Edinburgh to deny charges of rape and sexual misconduct. The officer, once active in Shetland, is accused by the Crown of multiple offenses, including the alleged rape of a teenage girl and a woman.
The accusations against the 32-year-old span a period from 2014 to 2022, involving the assault and rape of a teenager, who was reportedly underage at the time of the alleged incidents. The court also heard allegations that a second woman was raped in 2022 during a social event, while she was incapacitated due to intoxication.
During his testimony, Williamson robustly rejected claims that he engaged in sexual activities with the teenager before she turned 16, stating the interaction did not commence until she was of age. Furthermore, he denied accusations of sexual engagement with the adult woman at an event in 2022, asserting there was no contact of a sexual nature during or after the gathering at the community hall.
Defense lawyer David Nicolson KC questioned Williamson during the proceedings, where Williamson maintained his stance that no inappropriate actions occurred between him and either complainant. He refuted any claims suggesting that there had been any further involvement after the alleged incidents.
Williamson, who hails from Burra, detailed his history with law enforcement prior to his suspension, illustrating his prior role and experience in the force. Despite his lengthy service as a constable, his career is currently marred by these serious allegations hanging over him.
The trial is being overseen by Judge John Morris KC and is set to continue as the court examines the testimonies and evidence brought forward by both the defense and prosecution teams. Williamson firmly denies all charges levied against him in connections to the incidents across various locations in Shetland.
