Syria Captures Ex-Military Officials from al-Assad Era Over Civilian Attacks

Former Syrian Military Personnel Detained for Alleged Civilian Attacks

In a significant development, Syrian authorities have taken into custody five former military officers from the era of Bashar al-Assad, accused of participating in devastating air raids on civilian communities. This move marks an ongoing effort by Syria’s current regime to hold individuals accountable for past atrocities.

The arrests were conducted through coordinated operations with the Counter Terrorism Directorate, as announced by the Syrian Internal Security Forces based in the coastal province of Tartous. Among those detained is a high-ranking air force general, alongside several other officers, suggesting a targeted approach against military figures involved in past governance.

Investigations Shed Light on Airstrike Operations

These former officers allegedly utilized military resources, including airbases and field command centers, to execute significant airstrikes during Assad’s leadership. Colonel Abdul Aal, spokesperson for the internal security, emphasized that the detainees played crucial roles in orchestrating these operations, leading to extensive destruction and casualties in residential areas.

The accused individuals, identified as Major-General Mohammad Fajr Ali and others, are reportedly linked to strategic planning and execution of these military campaigns. Their actions contributed to the devastation that characterized much of Syria’s civil war period.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Broader Implications

As investigations proceed, the Syrian judiciary is preparing to bring these former officers to trial. This series of arrests is part of a larger trend by the current government to dismantle any remnants of Assad’s regime and address the injustices incurred under his rule.

Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, the new administration has actively pursued former regime officials. More recently, it was reported that several other ex-military figures, including three generals, faced charges for bombings during their tenure.

In a related judgment, the Syrian courts recently sentenced Assad and his close political and military allies to death in absentia, signaling increased efforts to hold accountable those responsible for the wartime suffering. Assad reportedly fled Syria as the government he once led collapsed and has since sought refuge in Russia.

This wave of arrests and trials reflects an ongoing shift in Syrian governance and accountability, as the country attempts to rebuild and reconcile past grievances.
