Challenges Facing London’s Iconic Bus Network
The iconic red buses of London, emblematic of the city’s bustling transport system, are increasingly symbolic of a larger problem: slower service speeds. Amid rising concerns over the efficacy of public transport, London’s buses are becoming a significant pain point for commuters, with numerous routes experiencing slower travel times than ever before.
Experts foresee a troubling future for the city’s bus network, as findings suggest a substantial reduction in bus speeds over the last decade. This reduction spells disaster for many, particularly those who depend heavily on buses for daily travel. In some of the city’s most congested areas, passengers have reported journey times increasing substantially—on some routes, average speeds are now slower than a decade ago.
A Citywide Trend of Slower Speeds
The 22 route, which weaves through some of the busiest parts of the city towards Oxford Circus, offers a stark illustration of the issue. Bus speeds have decreased by 16% over the last ten years, now averaging less than 6mph. This notable decline has strained passengers who endure long waits and extended travel times.
The trend perceived on the 22 is not isolated; the 207 bus to White City, for instance, moves 14% slower than it did a decade ago. These findings echo across London, best demonstrated by data showing that 578 out of 700 bus routes have declined in speed.
Broader Implications for Public Transport
Compounding the issue, as average speeds falter, overall passenger journeys have plummeted. Since 2013, the number of annual passenger journeys dropped dramatically by over 300 million, correlating with a speed reduction of nearly 5% across the network. London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan has acknowledged reliability issues as the main deterrent for passengers, who are increasingly opting for alternative modes of transit.
This decline is part of a larger context, where not just London, but other major cities like Paris and Lisbon report similar trends. Congested roadways and increased demands on road space are key contributors causing significant disruptions to schedules.
The Vicious Cycle of Declining Bus Services
The deteriorating quality of bus services feeds into a cycle: slower buses deter commuters, leading to reduced passenger numbers and further pressure on transport services. This “vicious circle” magnifies the struggle cities face in maintaining a reliable and efficient transport system. Research indicates that a 10% drop in bus speed corresponds with a 6% decline in ridership, a statistic seen globally.
Efforts to address these challenges, including adjusting bus timetables to more accurately reflect delays, highlight the pressing need for comprehensive solutions. With schedules now accounting for more delay than ever before, the transport sector continues to be stretched thin, exacerbated by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
