A Hidden Tragedy Revealed in Bulgaria
Recent archaeological findings in Bulgaria have shed light on a tragic moment from the Late Roman period. The discovery inside the ancient settlement of Deultum reveals a man who sought refuge during a catastrophic event in an unexpected place—a massive Roman storage jar.
An Unexpected Discovery
This extraordinary find was made on August 10, when archaeologists uncovered the skeleton at the base of a ceramic vessel known as a dolium. These containers, prevalent in Roman times for storing various commodities like wines and oils, seldom serve as final resting places for humans. However, the remains unearthed in Deultum mark a rare and somber exception.
Traces of Ancient Turmoil
The circumstances surrounding the man’s demise were pieced together from the archaeological evidence surrounding the jar. Remnants of a destructive fire were evident, with soot and debris clearly visible. Additional findings, including scattered coins and structural damage, hint at an episode of intense violence, likely linked to historic invasions by forces such as the Huns or East Germanic tribes during the fourth and fifth centuries.
A Desperate Act in the Face of Danger
Additional clues suggest the fire was already underway when the man entered the jar, seeking refuge from the unfolding chaos. Among his belongings were two iron knives and a belt, suggesting he may have been prepared to defend himself as he hid. His efforts to escape the violence sealed his fate within the ceramic confines.

The chapter closed soon after the attack. Following the disaster, the site appeared to have been reconstructed, unknowingly preserving the man’s remains beneath a new flooring layer. His skeleton was transported to Sofia, where additional studies might provide insights into his age and background, though his identity remains unknown.
