A treasure trove of early recordings by the legendary David Bowie is about to see the light of day. Alec Palao, a music historian, stumbled upon these hidden gems a decade ago while rifling through old records. Among these were five tracks recorded by a young Bowie, then performing as Davie Jones. These songs, alongside five others discovered later, are now set for their streaming debut.
These newly uncovered recordings capture Bowie’s raw and experimental phase during his teenage years in the vibrant London music scene of the 1960s. Palao reflects on the tracks as a fascinating glimpse into the era, when Bowie aspired to stardom and was already leaving an imprint on the industry. Though this material veers from the more polished Bowie sound, it highlights the nascent genius of a future icon.
Icon Encountered
Renowned for his transformative career, Bowie catapulted to fame with his 1969 hit “Space Oddity” and continued to impact global pop culture until his death in 2016. This new collection, “The Shel Talmy Recordings,” includes remastered demos alongside the rare tracks, offering fans a glimpse of Bowie’s formative years.
The recordings were part of the personal archives of Shel Talmy, Bowie’s first producer, known for his work with notable bands like The Kinks and The Who. Among the highlights is a remastered version of the track “I Pity The Fool,” a song recalled fondly by singer Dana Gillespie, who collaborated with Bowie.
Reviving Bowie’s Legacy
The material, which will also see a limited vinyl release, has been licensed to Warner through Talmy Enterprises. Proceeds will support Bowie’s estate, ensuring that his artistic legacy continues to flourish.
Dana Gillespie shared memories of Bowie’s determination and ambition, recounting tales from their days at the Marquee Club. Their friendship blossomed through music, with Bowie writing “Andy Warhol” for Gillespie, showcasing their creative synergy.
The release of these tracks is not only a tribute to Bowie’s legacy but also a celebration of an era that laid the foundation for his illustrious journey. For both seasoned fans and new generations, these songs are an opportunity to reconnect with a timeless cultural figure.
