Rescue of Missing Hiker on Isle Royale
In a remarkable rescue, 70-year-old hiker Craig Berg was found alive but in a challenging state on the rugged Isle Royale. The resolute efforts of Michigan state police, local officials, and resourceful backpackers concluded successfully on Saturday when Berg was discovered after being reported missing for over a week.
The solo adventurer had embarked on a nine-day backpacking trip on this isolated island situated in Lake Superior. Despite being discovered in a hypothermic condition, Berg was conscious and responsive, much to the relief of his family and rescuers. The search began when Berg failed to return home as expected by 5 September, the date he planned to take a ferry back to the mainland.
Multi-Agency Effort Leads to Rescue
A coordinated effort, including a helicopter team from the US Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City, played a crucial role in locating and airlifting Berg to safety. He was transported to Marquette Regional Airport in Gwinn, Michigan, situated approximately 140 miles from the park.
The rescue mission kicked off on 6 September, focusing initially on Rock Harbor, the intended endpoint of Berg’s hike. The search area extended to other parts of the park, including various trails where Berg was last sighted through a trail camera at the end of August.
Family’s Relief and Gratitude
Evan Berg, Craig’s son, expressed profound relief upon learning of his father’s condition. Despite Craig’s evident struggle, his ability to communicate and request basic needs such as food and water was a comforting sign to his family. Evan conveyed heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved in the search and to those who supported them throughout this harrowing experience.
Spanning around 200 square miles, Isle Royale’s challenging terrain demands any ground search to be conducted on foot, with dense forests and rocky ridges complicating rescue operations.
