McQueen’s Dramatic Return to London Fashion Week
The legendary fashion house Alexander McQueen made a powerful statement with its Spring/Summer 2027 collection at London Fashion Week this season. Choosing to return to its British roots, the brand unveiled a collection that revived a haunting yet beautiful aesthetic, reminiscent of its founder, Lee McQueen’s original vision.
In a nod to McQueen’s iconic past, the collection was showcased in a 17th-century London chapel. The location underlined the dark yet strikingly elegant theme with models strutting in steel harnesses and shoes resembling electronic tags. A standout piece was a dress crafted from chain mail with a pattern of tiny silver skulls, a chilling yet captivating sight that mirrored the brand’s roots.
Navigating Challenges Through Creativity
Despite its legacy, Alexander McQueen is currently navigating turbulent times. Since the passing of its founder, Sarah Burton carried forward the mantle, earning acclaim for designs such as Kate Middleton’s wedding gown. However, facing market challenges, the brand is undergoing restructuring, including store closures.
The decision to return to London was spearheaded by CEO Gianfranco d’Attis, in the hopes of reinvigorating the brand with the city’s electric energy. The latest collection draws a clear line back to British tailoring while also cutting down on casual apparel to focus on high-fashion pieces meant for red carpet occasions.
Infusing Modern British Influences
Creative director Seán McGirr, who joined McQueen in 2023, highlighted the brand’s British influence through the collection. Choosing a historical undercroft for the show, McGirr’s intention was to capture the ethereal aspects of British culture seen in iconic artworks like Piero della Francesca’s ‘The Baptism of Christ’. His designs are characterized by lightness and modern tailoring reminiscent of Tommy Nutter, contrasted with playful nods to London’s underground rave culture.
McGirr himself expressed a desire to inject a sense of ethereal lightness into McQueen’s style, crafting garments with organza fashioned into avant-garde shapes under the influence of old-world charm mixed with modern design twists.
