Dr. Gibbs Reflects on Lucy Letby Inquiry Findings
In a recent interview with the BBC, Dr. John Gibbs, a former consultant paediatrician at Countess of Chester Hospital, openly reflected on the disturbing conclusions revealed by the Lucy Letby inquiry. The thorough investigation explores the systemic failures at the facility during 2015 and 2016 when Letby, a neonatal nurse, committed heinous crimes against infants.
Having worked during the period when Letby was found guilty of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder several more, Dr. Gibbs expressed a deep sense of remorse and responsibility shared among his fellow consultants. He candidly admitted that, in hindsight, they should have approached the police much earlier when suspicions about Letby first arose.
Systemic Failures Unveiled
The inquiry, spearheaded by Lady Justice Thirlwall, culminated in a comprehensive 822-page report that criticized how the hospital leaders handled the situation, underlining a failure to act expediently to protect vulnerable infants. Lucy Letby has been sentenced to serve 15 whole-life imprisonment terms following her conviction. Despite the severity of her crimes, online conspiracy theories questioning her guilt have circulated, frustrating Dr. Gibbs and other medical professionals involved in the case. He reiterated his belief in Letby’s guilt but acknowledged the necessity for an independent review of the evidence by the Criminal Cases Review Commission.
